The woman, Miriam Lawrence, said her daughter Eliana went “essentially bald” after using WEN only three times in 2014, according to The Mirror.

When Eliana’s long red hair “fell out in chunks,” people thought she had cancer and she begged her mother for a wig for her 10th birthday. She was bullied so much she had to be home-schooled for two years. Here are some pictures:

Eliana is back in school now, but her mother called the last two years “heart-breaking” and said only about 70% of her hair has returned.

Miriam Lawrence said she filed a report with the FDA because she thought it would help get the product recalled. Instead, she says:

“I was shocked to learn that the FDA has no authority to recall personal care products. … I later found out the makers of Wen had documented tens of thousands complaints of hair loss from this product.”

The FDA is investigating 127 complaints about WEN causing hair loss, breakage, balding, itching, and rash. It is the largest number of reports the agency has ever received for any cosmetic hair-care product.

Those complaints are just a tiny fraction of what was directly filed with the manufacturers of WEN. Over 21,000 complaints were submitted to Guthy-Renker LLC and Chaz Dean Inc., according to the FDA.

WEN Cleansing Conditioner is still on the market and has not been recalled. In August, the manufacturer offered to pay a $25 million settlement to end a class action lawsuit involving hundreds of people.

Earlier this year, lawmakers introduced the Personal Care Products Safety Act. It would require cosmetics companies to report safety data and give the FDA power to issue recalls.

  1. I know this woman and the kid, and the mother is totally psychotic. And horribly mean. The child has alopecia, as shampoo cannot cause eyelash hair loss! Or hair loss elsewhere on the body! The woman is looking for blood because attacking other people is her favorite pastime. A total B.
