The recall affects Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokees from model years 2011-2014, according to USA Today.
In addition to the vehicles subject to recall in the U.S., about 42,000 are being recalled in Canada and 21,000 in Mexico are affected.
A potential error made during brake-booster shield installation may have allowed water intrusion, which can cause corrosion and freezing.
“Brake function may be degraded,” Fiat Chrysler said.
The automaker said it was aware of at least one non-injury crash associated with the defect.
Signs of trouble may include “excessive brake-pedal firmness,” a warning light, and/or activation of anti-lock brakes, the company said.
Fiat Chrysler tried to fix the problem in 2014 by installing the shields; however, some were installed wrong, the automaker said in a recent review of warranty data.
Dealers will inspect vehicles to check to see whether the shields were installed properly, and will fix them for free if necessary.
