The recall affects more than 390,000 Hyundai Elantras from model years 2013 and 2014, as well as over 134,000 Kia Forte vehicles from model years 2012 through 2014.
Both companies are blaming the problem on a polymer stopper pad between the pedal arm and the light switch that can break down over time, allowing the switch to stay on. This can keep the brake lights lit and allow the gear to shift out of park without putting a foot on the brake, according to the automakers.
To date, no accidents or injuries have been associated with the problem, the companies said.
Dealers will replace the brake stopper pad free of charge. Kia’s recall starts Jan. 30, while Hyundai’s begins Feb. 8.
