The recall was ordered after PepsiCo received at least 18 complaints of a metallic taste, from late February to early April.
An investigation found tiny particles of iron and chromium in the 16.9-ounce bottles due to a parts failure in the manufacturing process. In March, PepsiCo removed the cola from nearly 200 Michigan stores “out of an abundance of caution.” No other Pepsi products are affected.
“The metal flecks found during the investigation were very small (0.1-0.3 mm), but there is a concern that larger flecks could have been formed when the equipment failed,” the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said in a statement.
Affected Pepsi bottles have product codes HC022373 and HC022473. Anyone in possession of recalled products should return them to the place of purchase and contact the company with additional questions.
To date, no known injuries or illnesses have been linked to the issue.
