200 Million Eggs Recalled for Salmonella Contamination

Brown and White Eggs

The eggs were sourced from a farm owned by Rose Acre Farms in Hyde County, N.C., and distributed to consumers in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

According to an FDA Recall Notice issued on Monday, the recalled eggs were sold under the following brand names:

The recall involves eggs with the plant number P-1065, with the Julian date range of 011 through 102 printed on either side of the carton or package.

“Consumers with these eggs shouldn’t eat them,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. “Throw them away or return them to place of purchase for credit or refund.”

Eating food contaminated with salmonella bacteria can cause salmonellosis, a common foodborne illness that causes varying degrees of the following symptoms within 12 to 72 hours after consumption:

Salmonellosis typically lasts 4 to 7 days, but in some patients diarrhea may be so severe that it requires hospitalization. Children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems are particularly likely to develop severe reactions to the bacterium.
