Toyota says the airbag control module on affected models could flip itself into a fault-detection mode upon vehicle startup, which would render the airbags useless during an accident.

The new recall affects about 188,000 vehicles all told, with 185,000 of them sold in North America. The automaker will begin notifying owners of the recall this month, and will be asked to schedule an appointment with the dealership to have the airbag control software recalibrated.

Toyota didn’t say whether any injuries or accidents have been associated with the issue, but concerned car owners may contact the company’s customer service department with any questions or concerns.
