Starting in November 2018, Honey Smacks will return to stores in the U.S. in limited quantities with a new recipe and a different production facility.
Kellogg Co. said in a press release that the cereal will have “a simpler, updated recipe, while still delivering deliciously sweetened, honey-flavored puffed wheat cereal.”
Furthermore, production for the cereal was moved to a “trusted and tested Kellogg-owned facility that has been reliably producing the cereal for decades,” according to the press release.
Before the outbreak, Honey Smacks was produced by a 3rd-party manufacturer that was based in Illinois.
The outbreak of Salmonella infected at least 135 people across 36 states, including 34 people who were hospitalized. No deaths were reported. Honey Smacks cereal was recalled in June 2018.
