Honey Smacks Recall Expanded After 73 Diagnosed with Salmonella

The expanded Honey Smacks recall includes any sized packages with any “use-by” date, the agency said. Kellogg’s says it is currently recalling about 1.3 million boxes of Honey Smacks in total.

“FDA is advising consumers to not eat and to discard any Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal,” the agency wrote in a statement. “This is regardless of size or ‘best if used by’ dates. The recall notice accounts for all of the product that is on the market within the cereal’s estimated one year shelf-life. However, Honey Smacks products with earlier dates could also potentially be contaminated.”

Honey Smacks have been linked to a 31-state salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 73 people, 24 of whom required hospitalization to treat their symptoms, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned on Friday.

“An outbreak of 73 Salmonella infections from 31 states has been linked to Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal,” CDC said. “Do not eat recalled cereal. Throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.”

Health officials are using the PulseNet system to determine whether new illnesses are part of the outbreak. PulseNet is the national subtyping network of public health and food regulatory agency laboratories coordinated by the CDC.
