The recall affects certain 2006 Sonatas, as well as 2006 through 2011 Azeras, according to a recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Hyundai said that water can get into the antilock brake module, which can overheat and cause a fire even when the vehicles are not running. It is unclear whether the cars should be parked outside until repairs can be made.
Dealerships will install a relay in the main electrical box to shut down the brake modules while the vehicles are turned off. However, it was not certain if the fix would solve the problem of electrical shorts while the engines are still running.
Hyundai said it may issue additional guidance within the next few days. The recall is expected to begin on February 23, the company said.
Documents show one overheated module in South Korea and one fire in the U.S., but no injuries or other incidents have been linked to the recall.
