The problem is suspected to be a yellow cap that was inadvertently left on during the manufacturing process which could cover one of the two smoke sensors, affecting the device’s ability to detect smoke, CPSC said in a recall notice on Wednesday.
The recall involves Kidde PI2010 and PI9010 model dual-sensor smoke alarms, which were sold from Sept. 2016-Jan. 2018 at Walmart, Menard’s, The Home Depot, Amazon.com and other retailers across the U.S.
If you own a Kidde smoke alarm, you should check it to see if the yellow cap is present. If so, do not attempt to take the device apart, and instead contact Kidde for a free replacement.
If no cap is found, the smoke alarm does not need to be replaced.
To date, there have been no reports of fire extinguisher failure or other incidents associated with the recall, CPSC said.
