Mazda Recalls 640,000 Vehicles Over Valve Spring Problems

The automaker said the action would affect about 230,000 vehicles in Japan and around 410,000 vehicles in its overseas markets, excluding the U.S., where Mazda does not sell diesel models.

Mazda’s announcement follows rival Subaru’s recall of 400,000 vehicles for a similar valve spring problem, which the company estimated would cost nearly an entire year’s earnings to fix.

Japanese automakers across the board seem to be struggling with issues spanning the gamut from defective parts to testing misconduct, which are increasing costs and raising questions about quality controls.
