The recalled kratom was sold by PDX Aromatics directly to consumers online from Jan. 18 to Feb. 18, according to an FDA recall notice issued on Monday.
PDX Aromatics does business as 3 entities, which the recalled kratom products are named after: Kraken Kratom, Phytoextractum, and Soul Speciosa.
Affected items include at least 10,000 “units,” which were packaged in plastic heat sealed pouches and sold in weights of 28 grams, 56 grams, and 112 grams.
“PDX Aromatics has identified a supplier in our supply chain as the source of Salmonella,” FDA said in the recall notice. “The company has removed that supplier from our supply chain and all associated products from our facility.”
The problem with PDX kratom appears to be part of a larger salmonella outbreak involving various brands of kratom powders that has sickened at least 40 people in 27 states since Oct. 2017. The FDA and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are currently investigating to determine the source of contamination.
