Affected Pictsweet asparagus were distributed to 34 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, according to a recall notice by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA); however, the notice failed to specify which retailers received the product. FDA also did not mention in the notice who supplied the asparagus.
“The company initiated this recall after it was notified by the manufacturer that product suspected of containing Listeria monocytogenes was inadvertently shipped to The Pictsweet Company,” FDA said.
Affected products were shipped in 8-ounce packages labeled with the UPC 0 70560 97799 9, production codes beginning with “2138XD” and a best-by date of Aug. 1, 2020.
FDA is not aware of any listeria infections to be linked to the Pictsweet Asparagus issue to date. However, listeria can incubate for up to 70 days before producing any recognizable symptoms, the agency said.
When they do appear, symptoms of listeriosis typically include varying degrees of:
- Muscle aches
- Fever
- Flu-like symptoms
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
Those at greatest risk of developing severe symptoms include newborn babies, the elderly population, and people with a weakened immune system.
