Raw Chicken Recalled for Potential Salmonella Contamination

FSIS identified the link between Empire Kosher brand raw chicken products following an outbreak of food poisoning illnesses suspected to be salmonella infections in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic U.S., the agency said. Half of those infected were hospitalized due to the severity of their symptoms.

Affected products, which may include raw whole chickens and/or chicken parts, were shipped to distributors from September 2017 to June 2018, FSIS said.

The incubation period for salmonella, or time between ingestion of bacteria and presentation of symptoms, ranges from several hours to a few days. Most cases of the illness can be classified as stomach flu (gastroenteritis). Signs and symptoms of salmonella infection include:

FSIS is concerned that some of the recalled chicken may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to properly handle, prepare, and cook these raw chicken products.
