The miles-to-empty display may indicate that range remains, even if the gas tank is empty, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall affects 228,648 Legacy and Outback vehicles from model year 2018.

Subaru is in the process of checking dealerships to make sure they have the proper reprogramming tool. Paperwork filed with NHTSA indicates that it may still be a few weeks before the recall can be performed.

The automaker will inform owners of affected vehicles by mail starting next month. To date, no injuries, accidents or other incidents have been associated with the recall, NHTSA said.
