The recall affects the following vehicles from model years 2012-2013:
- Subaru Forester Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV)
- Subaru Impreza
- Subaru BRZ
- Toyota 86
- Toyota Scion FR-S
Subaru said valve springs in the above vehicles could fracture and cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of an accident. The springs keep engine valves closed when fuel is being combusted. Failure of these components can result in major engine damage, the automaker said.
Repairing the problem is likely to be costly, as the process takes 12 or more hours to make.
Toyota said its models account for about 80,000 of the recalled vehicles. In the U.S., Toyota is calling back 25,000 Scion FR-S models, and said it will begin notifying owners next month.
Subaru said 101,000 of the recalled vehicles were sold in Japan, and that about 270,000 of the affected models were sold in the U.S. during that period.
