Texas Firm Recalls Ground Beef Products for STEC E. Coli

The recalled meat was produced by Texas Natural Meats on August 8, 2017, FSIS said in a recall notice issued on Wednesday.

Products affected by the recall include 1 lb. bags of “Green Field Farms Rogers Texas Ground Beef.” The bags are printed with the “PRODUCTION DATE 08.08.2017” and “EXPIRATION DATE 08.08.2020.” The bags are also labeled “COOK USE ONLY” with the instruction “DO NOT refreeze after defrosting,” FSIS said. Certain types of E. coli cause disease by making a toxin called Shiga toxin, referred to as “Shiga toxin-producing” E. coli, or STEC for short, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The toxin produced by STEC is also known as verotoxin or verocytotoxin, and causes blood vessel damage, hemorrhagic colitis (bloody diarrhea), and contributes to a fatal type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in humans.

If you purchased any beef products affected by this recall, you should not eat them, and either discard them immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.

To date, the recalled beef has not been linked to any E. coli infections or other illnesses, FSIS said.
