As the Takata airbag recall continues to grow, Toyota and Ford announced recalls for over 600,000 vehicles in the U.S. to replace defective or potentially deadly airbags that can explode too forcefully.
Ford is telling 2,900 owners of certain 2006 Ford Rangers to stop driving them and visit the dealership to replace the trucks’ air bag.
One driver was killed in July 2017 in West Virginia when a Takata airbag in their 2006 Ford Ranger exploded, according to Ford. It was the second death Ford has linked to a defective Takata air bag inflator.
Toyota recalled approximately 601,000 vehicles. The following vehicles from the 2009, 2010, and 2013 model-years were recalled:
- Toyota Corolla
- Toyota Matrix
- Toyota Scion xB
- Lexus IS250
- Lexus 350
- Lexus IS-F
The recall covers the 2010 and 2013 model-years of the following vehicles:
- Toyota 4-Runner
- Lexus IS250C
- Lexus 350C
- Lexus GX460
The recall also covers the 2009 and 2010 Toyota Yaris and Lexus ES350, as well as the 2013 Toyota Sienna.
At least 20 people have died worldwide and over 280 have been injured. More air bags are scheduled to be recalled in December 2019, bringing the total number of recalled air bags to 70 million.
