Bacillus cereus produces toxins that cause vomiting and diarrhea, according to the journal Nature Microbiology. Symptoms are typically mild and only last for around 24 hours before subsiding. It causes two types of foodborne illness – vomiting and diarrheal syndromes.

Although most cases of infection with Bacillus cereus are mild by comparison to some other foodborne pathogens, FDA is aware of more serious and even deadly cases of the illness.

Individuals at increased risk for severe infections include young children, the elderly population, and people with compromised immune systems (such as HIV patients). To date, no infections or other injuries have been associated with the recalled products, FDA said.

If you purchased any Health Naturals baby cough syrup + mucus that is affected by this recall, you should either discard it immediately or return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.
