Yellowfin Tuna Steaks Recalled for Salmonella Risk

The recall affects 3 lots of individually packaged 1-pound bags and 20-pound boxes of Jensen Tuna Inc.’s frozen raw ground tuna, CDC said. Lot numbers of the recalled products are z266, z271, and z272.

States reporting salmonella illnesses linked to the recalled tuna include Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, New York and Washington. Of the 13 people victims, at least 2 were hospitalized as a result of their illness, FDA said.

“Jensen Tuna distributed product to all the states where ill people were reported, but recalled product might have been redistributed to additional states,” CDC said.

Most cases of salmonellosis last less than a week, but in some patients diarrhea may be so severe that it requires hospitalization. Children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems are particularly likely to develop severe reactions from the bacteria.

The recalled tuna should not be sold or served by stores or restaurants, CDC warned.

“Consumers who order sushi made with raw tuna, including ‘spicy tuna,’ should ask the restaurant or grocery store if the tuna is supplied by Jensen Tuna,” the agency said. “If you are not sure if the tuna has been recalled, do not eat it.”
