Honda Recalling 437,000 Vehicles for Defective Fuel Pump

Honda is recalling 2.1 million Accord vehicles worldwide because defects in the battery system can cause the engine to catch on fire.

Honda said software in the recalled vehicles needs to be updated, and in some cases, their fuel pumps may need to be replaced.

The problem stems from the presence of sodium particulates in some U.S. gasolines, which can stick to internal components in fuel pumps, reducing their performance. In hot weather, this could significantly limit the vehicles’ ability to accelerate, and even cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Owners of affected models will begin being notified by mail next month, during which they will be advised to take their vehicles to dealerships and have the problem fixed free of charge.

To date, there have been no accidents, injuries or other adverse events associated with the recall, Honda said.
