Lawyers for the plaintiff that filed the Just For Men lawsuit have stated that the allergic reaction was caused by the chemical p-Phenylenediamine, or PPD, an agent found in many hair dyes.
“PPD has been linked to severe and sudden allergic reactions including serious skin irritation, anaphylaxis and even death,” the lawsuit says.

62-year old David Collier has said in his lawsuit that he developed a severe skin reaction after applying the “Jet Black” Just For Men beard dye. The defendants in the Just For Men lawsuit include both Combe Products, Inc., which manufactures Just for Men, and Walmart, where Collier says he bought the product.
The Lawyer who filed the Just For Men lawsuit cited a Cleveland Clinic study noting the chemical is five times more likely to adversely impact African-American men than Caucasian men.
He stated, “We believe this is a dangerous product… There are probably thousands and thousands of people who are being impacted or have been impacted by the use of this product all over the United States and we believe this is something that becomes an issue for the public.”
Symptoms of Allergic Reaction From Just For Men Hair Dye
An allergic reaction from Just For Men may be immediate or pop up within 48 hours of treatment.
Hair dye and PPD allergy symptoms include:
- stinging or burning sensation on the scalp, face, or neck
- blisters or welts
- itching or swelling of the scalp and face
- swollen eyelids, lips, hands, or feet
- an angry, red rash anywhere on the body
Occasionally, a hair dye allergy will cause anaphylaxis to occur. This rare reaction is a medical emergency and can be fatal.
