The recall mainly affects luxury cars including Tesla, BMW, Ferrari and Mercedes, among others, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA).
The news follows announcements from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (the parent company of many of the vehicles being recalled) that it would be conducting a comprehensive audit on its entire line of vehicles to determine exactly which models may contain Takata airbags.
The problem with the inflators is that when a crash occurs, the airbags inflate with the help of canisters that contain explosive propellants.
Takata airbags use a volatile chemical called ammonium nitrate, which has been found to degrade after long-term exposure to high temperatures and humidity.
Degraded ammonium nitrate can cause inflators to pressurize without warning and explode when airbags deploy, sending liquid hot magma flying.
