Red Hots Recalled for Metal Contamination

Zeigler Red Hots

Selma, Al.-based R.L. Zeigler Co. issued the recall after the company received consumer complaints that packages of its Red Hots had small metal shavings in them, according to an FSIS Press Release issued on Dec. 30.

The recall affected the following products:
24-oz. plastic packages containing approximately 9 links of “ZEIGLER A TRADITION OF GREAT TASTE RED HOTS” with a “Use By Jan 24 19” date.
24-oz. plastic packages containing approximately 9 links of “EXTRA HOT ZEIGLER A TRADITION OF GREAT TASTE RED HOTS” with a “Use By Jan 24 19” date.

These products were distributed nationwide, and feature the establishment number “EST. P-9156S” inside the USDA seal of approval.

FSIS believes the following retail chains may have received the recalled sausages: Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, Walmart and Publix stores in Alabama, Ramey’s and Vowell’s markets in Alabama and Mississippi, and Winn Dixie supermarkets in Florida. Several other retailers in all 3 states, in addition to certain locations in Tennessee and Louisiana, may have also been distributed the recalled products, FSIS said.

If you purchased any of the above items, you should not eat them, and either discard them immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.

To date, no injuries or other adverse events have been associated with the recall, FSIS said.
