Toyota Motor Corp. has announced the recall of more than 1.7 million vehicles with airbag components that could cause the devices to explode without warning, sending dangerous metal shrapnel flying at high speed throughout the cabin.
In what could accurately be described as the recall that wouldn’t die, the Takata airbag debacle has affected nearly the entire automotive industry and claimed at least 23 lives worldwide, according to USA TODAY. The airbags were manufactured with ammonium nitrate that, in certain cases, exploded when the bags deployed, hurling fiery shrapnel into the driver and passengers.
The latest recall involving the airbags from hell affects the following vehicles:
- 4Runner (2010 through 2016)
- Corolla (2010 through 2013)
- Matrix (2010 through 2013)
- Sienna (2011 through 2014)
Lexus models:
- ES 350 (2010 through 2012)
- GX 460 (2010 through 2017)
- IS 250C (2010 through 2015)
- IS 350C (2010 through 2015)
- IS 250 (2010 through 2013)
- IS 350 (2010 through 2013)
- IS-F (2010 through 2014)
The recall also includes Scion XB models manufactured between 2010 and 2015, Toyota said.
To see if your vehicle is affected by the recall, simply go to the Toyota website and enter your VIN number. Owners of affected models will also be notified by snail mail, the automaker said.
