Amrita Bars Recalled for Listeria Risk

Amrita Health Foods, of Pleasantville, New York, voluntarily recalled a limited number of protein bars due to a risk of Listeria contamination in the sunflower seeds and sunflower seed butter ingredients.

No illnesses have been reported. The sunflower seeds were found to be contaminated with Listeria during routine product testing by Amrita’s supplier, Hudson Valley Foods, Inc., of Highland, New York.

The recalled Amrita Bars were sold nationwide between April 24 and May 31, 2017, with “Best-By” dates from April 24 until May 31, 2018.

Amrita Bars are available at stores like Wegmans, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Market Basket, Smoothie King, and online at amazon.com.

• Amrita Pineapple Chia, 50 gram, UPC 853009004025

• Amrita Cranberry Raisin, 50 gram, UPC 853009004032

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning infections, especially in people with vulnerable immune systems. Pregnant women often have no symptoms other than an unexplained miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth, or infected baby.

The symptoms of Listeria infections may include fever, body chills, muscle or joint pain, severe headache, stiffness, flu-like symptoms, and sometimes diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal cramps.
