Marcho Farms Recalls Cases of Veal, Beef, Pork for E. Coli Risk

Ground Meat Recall for E. Coli

The recall was issued after the Illinois State Meat Inspection Service reported a positive test for non-O157 Shiga-toxin producing E. coli in samples that were made with source material from Marcho Farms.

The recalled products were produced on April 11 and April 14 and sold in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and Illinois, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The following products are subject to recall:

There have been no confirmed reports of any illnesses related to consumption of these products.

Non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) outbreaks are rare, but tend to be primarily due to food poisoning and person-to-person transmissio. It is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause dehydration, watery diarrhea, and abdominal cramps for 2-8 days.

Most people recover from E. coli infections within a week, but some develop a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). According to the USDA:

[HUS] can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output.”

Anyone who experiences these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
