Miami Company Recalls 6,000 Pounds of Cheese Over Listeria Concerns

The recalled cheese was distributed in California only through supermarkets and other retail stores. Affected products include:

• Quesos De La Costa
• Queso Duro Blando
• Hard Soft Cheese

The cheese was packaged in 1-pound plastic bags with the name surrounded by an orange border and a small cow on the labeling. Affected products have an expiration date of Aug. 31, UPC code of 8 52304 74023 2, and lot number 254.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services revealed listeria in the finished products. La Nica has ceased production and distribution of the cheeses. This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Listeria infection, or listeriosis, is a foodborne illness that typically affects children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems. However, in rare cases otherwise healthy adults can become infected as well. Signs and symptoms of listeriosis include:

• Fever
• Muscle aches
• Nausea
• Diarrhea

If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include:

• Headache
• Stiff neck
• Confusion or changes in alertness
• Loss of balance
• Convulsions

Anyone in possession of recalled cheese should discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.
