The recalled papayas were distributed to markets and grocery stores in the state of California from August 10 until August 29, 2017.
The FDA issued the recall after a papaya that was not sold tested positive for Salmonella on September 8, 2017. Infections with Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and sometimes severe complications:
Salmonella infection can result in the organism entering the bloodstream and producing serious diseases such as arterial infections (ie, infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
The company that grew the papayas is “Productores y Exportadores de Carica Papaya de Tecoman y Costa Alegre S.P.R. de R.L.”
