Vermont Company Recalls Ground Beef for E. Coli Contamination

These products were produced and packaged by Vermont Livestock Slaughter and Processing on July 24-25, 2017. The company sold the recalled meat at Bread & Butter farm in Shelburne, Vermont, according to an FSIS recall notice issued Friday.

Affected meats have the establishment number “EST. 9558” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The problem was discovered September 30 when Vermont Livestock Slaughter and Processing notified FSIS of an investigation into E. coli O157:H7 illnesses.

“FSIS determined the cooked beef burgers that were served at an event at Bread & Butter Farm was the probable source of the reported illnesses,” the recall notice said. “Two case-patients were identified in Vermont with illness onset dates ranging from September 18, 2017, to September 23, 2017.”

Traceback data found that both patients had eaten ground beef products at the Bread & Butter Farm which were supplied by Vermont Livestock Slaughter & Processing.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) are a large and diverse group of bacteria found in the environment, foods, and intestines of people and animals, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others, including the 0157:H7 strain implicated in the ground beef recall, have the potential to make you violently ill.

FSIS and Vermont Livestock Slaughter & Processing are concerned that some of the recalled meat could still be frozen and in customers’ freezers. If you purchased any meat from the company you should discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
