Steve’s Real Food of Salt Lake City, Utah is recalling 5-lb “Raw Frozen Dog Food Turkey Canine Recipe” due to possible contamination with Salmonella.
The recall involves products with Lot #E178, UPC #6-91730-15303-8 and a “Best By” date of September 27, 2018.
The frozen turkey nuggets were distributed to retail pet food stores in states of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington.
Fifty two cases of this product were distributed between June 27, 2017 and July 15, 2017.
The FDA warns that Salmonella can cause illness in animals who eat the food. There is also a risk of infection to humans who handle contaminated pet food.
The symptoms of Salmonella infection in people may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. In pets, Salmonella can cause animals to be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.
This recall was issued after the Nebraska Department of Agriculture reported that a retail sample tested positive for Salmonella.
No illnesses have been reported in any people or pets. According to the FDA recall notice:
Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
