The recall includes orange cream, raspberry cream and chocolate-coated vanilla ice cream bars produced by the Dunkirk, New York-based Fieldbrook Farms Corp.
Affected products were sold under a variety of different brand names including Sundae Shoppe, Lucerne, and Stoneridge at a number of retailers, according to a Safety Alert issued January 9 by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalled ice cream has production dates from between January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2017, and a “best buy” date of January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2018.
“The expansion of the recall is out of precaution for consumer health and food safety after a few additional samples tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes,” FDA said in the safety alert.
Infection with Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, a condition that affects about 1,600 people each year in the U.S. — including 260 people who die from it — according to the CDC. Pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are most vulnerable to infection.
Signs and symptoms of listeriosis include:
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Muscle aches
- Loss of balance
- Convulsions
In pregnant women, symptoms may include:
- Miscarriage
- Stillbirth
- Infection of the infant
If you purchased any of the recalled ice cream bars, you should discard them immediately or return to the point of purchase for a full refund.
To date, no listeria infections or other illnesses have been linked to the recall, FDA said.
