Salmonella Typhimurium is a bacterium that causes severe gastrointestinal disease (gastroenteritis) and paratyphoid fever in humans and other animals. The illness occurs following ingestion of the bacteria on or in food, in water, or on fingers and other objects.
Most cases of contamination with Salmonella Typhimurium come from two sources: food products from dead waterfowl, hogs, and cattle; and wholesome food that has been infected with fecal matter during food storage (mice and rats) and during food preparation (human handlers).
Consumers who purchased any chicken salad products affected by the recall should discard them immediately or return to the place of purchase for a full refund.
