NHTSA said that if the ignition switches on affected vehicles are moved from “On” to “Accessory” while being driven, their airbag systems could also be turned off.

The recall affects the following 2017-2018 Nissan vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada:

  • Nissan Juke subcompact crossover
  • Nissan Frontier pickup truck
  • Nissan Sentra
  • Nissan Versa
  • Nissan NV and NV200 commercial vans

In Canada, the recall also affects 2017-2018 Nissan Micra city cars.

Nissan said that owners of the recalled vehicles will begin receiving notices in the mail later this month requesting they make an appointment with their dealership for an inspection of the ignition switch and a possible replacement.

In the interim, Nissan said that drivers of affected vehicles should remove all additional keys from their keychains until the repair can be performed so as to reduce the likelihood that the switch will move.
