Editor’s note: For more information on how to get your settlement, please visit WEN® Hair Care Class Action | Official Settlement WebSite.

Chaz Dean and Guthy-Renker LLC agreed to the class action settlement after denying all wrongdoing. They were accused of ignoring over 17,000 complaints and continuing to sell WEN products that caused baldness.

The $26,250,000 settlement has been split into two tiers:

  • Tier 1 Claim: $5 million has been set aside to provide a one-time $25 cash payment to anyone who bought WEN. The payout will be lower if more than 200,000 people sign up.
  • Tier 2 Claim: The remaining $20 million settlement will pay up to $20,000 to each person who had hair loss, hair damage, scalp irritation, or emotional distress from WEN.

To submit a Tier 2 claim, you will need evidence — “before-and-after” photos, receipts for out-of-pocket expenses, medical records, and written or video testimony from you, your hairdresser, or witnesses.

Tier 2 Claims have been split into four levels of compensation:

  1. $0 to $2,500 — Hair thinning, limited hair breakage, mild scalp irritation, up to 20% hair loss. Hair re-growth took 1-4 months. Limited evidence.
  2. $2,500 to $7,500 — Noticeable hair loss (up to 33%) or scalp irritation, small bald spots, obvious hair thinning. Hair re-growth took 5-10 months.
  3. $7,500 to $12,500 — Large bald spots over more than 33% of the scalp, severe scalp irritation for several months. Re-growth took 11-18 months.
  4. $12,500 to $20,000 — Lost more than 50% of hair with large bald spots that could not be hidden. Hair re-growth has been minimal.

To be eligible, you must have purchased or used at least one of the following WEN® Hair Care products between November 1, 2007 and September 19, 2016:

  • WEN Cleansing Conditioner
  • WEN Re-Moist Mask
  • WEN Treatment Mist Duo
  • WEN Treatment Oil
  • WEN SIXTHIRTEEN Ultra Nourishing Cleansing Treatment
  • WEN Re-Moist Intensive Hair Treatment
  • WEN Styling Crème
  • WEN Anti-Frizz Styling Crème
  • WEN Nourishing Mousse

  • WEN Texturizing Spray
  • WEN Detangling Treatment Spray
  • WEN Men Control Texture
  • WEN Men Hair and Body Oil
  • WEN Bath, Body, and Hair Oil
  • WEN Texture Balm

The court will meet on June 5, 2017 to give final approval to the settlement. All of the claims must be reviewed, so please be patient.

To keep your right to file a lawsuit against the manufacturers of WEN, you must “opt out” of the settlement by sending a letter in the mail stating that you want to be excluded no later than February 10, 2017.

I was sent the documents to fill out and return for the class action but I have accidentally lost it. All I have is a printed copy. Could you please send me a new document to fill out and attach my pictures?

  7. Speedway stuart April 26, 2017 at 5:25 pm

Pictures should be enough to prove u had hair lost by using wenhair products.to quality for 20,000dollars tier2 come with rules. Many lady do their own hair, many couldn’t afford to see a salon hair lady, many couldn’t afford to see a doctor, for depression over hair loss.this is why a picture of hair should have been all that you needed for proof.A whole lots of people will not get paid because of tier 2 rules. That is very sad.

  8. I used this when products sent in my letter and pictures. I can not afford an attorney or hair dresser. I feel I am obligated for pay my hair is a disaster. I sent in my letter and pictures.so please make your decision to be fair who saves reciets.I have so much of this products left I can’t use disclose I pray these people will take in to consideration the poor people. The world needs to be more honest. Not just for the rich.

Just found out about this, will i be included based on my purchase? Is it too late to file a claim? I have been to a Dermatologist and undergone several blood test. I was recently referred to a specialist for LUPUS non of the systoms apply to me except hair loss. Is this the reason for my hair loss? I purchased this product and used it about the same time when i notice a little shedding, then hand full of hairs in the drain after washing, now hair if visiably shorter and broken in the back sides and top.
I went through about a month of scratching vigoursly until i was given a prescription called Minoxidil and a foam for itching called CLOBETASOL PROPIONATE FOAM 100G.
My hair comes out when i comb and wash my hair. I’m afraid that i will eventually have to get it all cut off evenly which will be very short. My husband don’t like wigs nor does he like short hair styles. Im afraid i have no chose at this point. I’m not happy either!

  10. What’s going right now , with the Wen’s settlement, I have submitted my claim. I have not hear anything.

  11. Tracy Yarbrough July 14, 2017 at 8:41 pm

How can I file a lawsuit ? My hair fell out down to the scalp. It wasn’t until I was denied an insurance policy due to my blood results. I went to my dr. Whom I went to once a year for my physical . She said my liver enzymes were high and wanted to know if I was taking any kind of over the counter vitamins or something . It wasn’t for another six months or so when it kept rising I put two and two together and the hair falling out and figured it was the wen . I have all my Results and lots of pics. Please let me know if you can help.

  12. unfortunately Tracy the wen lawsuit has been going on for over a year now…..and that was one of the best kept secrets of the 21st century….and like u I also had problems with wen, and poo, pooed to stress, but by the time I found out about the lawsuit I was a few days to late….I filed a claim but being late I will receive nothing, I am still have problems because of it, I do complain constantly, but to no avail…..I suggest u get a private attorney….

  13. So it’s too late for the lawsuit? I used these Wen products and lost a whole lot of of hair. Not only is it thin, I also have bald spots 1 on the very top front of my head and 1 on the crown of my head. I have to use makeup or powder to cover it up. The back of my hair was extremely think all of my life but now mid back of head my hair is super thin. I don’t swim anymore because I’m so embarrassed.. uhg and now I’m out all together!!

I purchased Wen products several years ago. I experienced hair loss and scalp irritation. As soon as I realize this I made at least stopped using the product. I didn’t know about the lawsuit until today. What happens for the people who didn’t know there was a lawsuit until after the claim date?

  15. Why were Wen customers not notified about the law suite? I used Wen for several years and have hair loss and scalp irritation, but did not realize it was the shampoo. Now that I have switched, I have very little hair loss and my scalp does not itch. I was hoping for regrowth, but nothing so far. I feel very cheated here.

      Same.

  16. In September of 2017 I started to use Wen, I bought from QVC, within a couple months my hair, which was long, full, and my best attribute is now falling out, dull, broken! Off course I quit using when I saw my Dr. and hair stylist, they are who told me Wen was torture for hair. Now it seems because I started using after a date, I am to incur all the damage and cost, not to mention, the emotional stress it has caused. Please let me know what I can do. I am 62, widow, and extremely upset over this!!!!!!

  17. Sherie Buchanan June 12, 2019 at 6:07 pm

Have been trying to join the lawsuit but can’t find the website that was sent to me. “www.OrdersRenewalSettlement.com” It comes back as unsecured website.

  18. I am furious! I responded to the ads and purchased loads of this product. I loved the smell but didn’t put it all together until 2017. I was not aware of the pending suit as I had purchased alot of the product around the time of the deadline. My hair is still falling out. It comes out at the root. I am so angry! How could the product be marketed and sold during the time in which it was involved in the suit! I have no recourse as the deadline to be included has passed. Shouldn’t they have been required to notify me! This is so unfair!!!

  19. Lori Mathisen June 19, 2019 at 9:51 pm

I am extremely upset that Wen customers were not notified by this lawsuit! I just found out about this days ago. I purchased Wen 9 years ago in my mid 30’s, always had thick, full hair. I started using this product and clumps of hair was coming out in the shower. I discontinued use but not before the damage was done. My hair has completely thinned out and is horrible with visible scalp and no growth back. I contributed it to stress and have tried to do many things to repair the damage to no avail.

Has anyone had luck with another product helping to get their thick hair back?

  20. Nicole Getsie July 4, 2019 at 10:20 am

I used wen for a couple months back in 2015. I ordered the sample kit and then chose a full size bottle and used most of that as well, along with the leave in conditioner and powder products, too. I started to notice more hair than usual falling into the drain and into my fingers while “cleansing”. At first I didn’t connect it to wen and used it for another two months before quitting the product.
I also began getting painful bumps and scabs on my scalp while and after using wen. They eventually healed and I hoped for my long hair to thicken back up. I’ve been waiting for four years. I not notice thicker parts in my hair and small bald patches when my hair is styled certain ways.
I always thought my hair was one of my best qualities and now I’ve lost a lot of confidence due to the thinning and hair loss.

  21. I used Wen products for years and noticed my hair thinning but thought it was due to age. I now have extreme hair loss and I never knew that the products may have caused it. I am 64 years old and I am completely bald in the top of my head. I am extremely upset because there were no warnings from the manufacturer or QVC where I purchased it for years. I spent a lot of money on these products and this is what I got.

  22. My sister told me about the law suit, she knew I was faithfully using Wen, mostly the Deep Cleanse Shampoo, I have drastically saw hair loss over a period of time, my hair that used to be fine, but wavy & shiny is now , extremely thin , fried & one big frizz ball, I never connected this to Wen, which I loved the smell & it didn’t come out that much when I combed it out in the shower, but when drying it after use , my hair became very brittle, dried out & frizzy & thinner , extremely devastated !!

  23. I have been using Wen products I now have a bald spot in the front and my head itches all the time. I am also a hairdresser and didn’t know that this product was bad for people to use, my hair is falling out from this I Went.

    1. Me Too. I have lost 40% of my Hair as well, can we start a Class Action against Wen since they have continued to sell these chemicals in their shampoo’s and conditioners even tho they lost a class action in 2017 and had to pay up to 20,000 per claimant(17000 claimants), I wish I had known about that as I would have never used their Products!!!!
