The recall affects about 17,000 Scion xA vehicles from model years 2004 to 2006 that were sold in the U.S.

Additional Scions were sold in Europe and Japan.

Toyota said an electrical short can damage circuits, causing airbags not to operate as designed.

Owners of affected models will be notified beginning next month.
