Hilo Fish Company of Hawaii issued the recall in May 2017 after frozen yellowfin tuna cubes and steaks tested positive for Hepatitis A. The tuna came from Sustainable Seafood Company in Vietnam and Santa Cruz Seafood in the Philippines.

The tuna was shipped to Texas, California, and Oklahoma and it was likely eaten raw in ahi poke and sushi. An unvaccinated person who ate the recalled seafood is at risk of infection with Hepatitis A, but symptoms may not appear for 6 weeks.

No illnesses have been reported to date, but the FDA advises anyone who may have been exposed to contact a healthcare professional.

The recall involves 8-ounce frozen tuna steaks that were sold in individual vacuum-sealed bags with Date Code: 627152, Lot number: 166623, and Expiration date: 2018-10-01.

The recall also involves frozen yellowfin tuna cubes that were sold in vacuum-packed 15-lb cases with Date Code: 705342, Lot number: 173448, and Expiration Date: 2019-04-01.

Hepatitis A is a contagious virus that causes liver inflammation. The illness ranges from mild symptoms for a few weeks to a severe illness lasting several months. Unlike other types of hepatitis, infection with Hepatitis A is not permanent.

The symptoms of Hepatitis A infection in adults include fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abnormal liver tests, dark urine, and pale stools. These symptoms may not appear for up to 50 days after exposure.
