SunSetter Products recalled all soft vinyl awning covers used with SunSetter® Motorized Retractable Awnings due to a safety hazard.

If the motorized awning is turned on when the cover is still secured with the bungee tie-downs, when the cover is removed, the awning can open unexpectedly with enough force to injure a person.

The company has received 14 reports of incidents, including 1 report of a death and 6 reports of injuries.

The 73 year-old man who died fell off a ladder and over a balcony when the motorized awning opened unexpectedly and hit him while he was removing the cover’s bungee tie-downs.

Consumers should contact SunSetter for free breakaway safety clips to replace the bungee tie-downs provided with the cover.

The models include SunSetter Motorized, Motorized XL, Motorized PRO, Motorized PROXL, and Oasis Freestanding Motorized Retractable Awnings.

The awnings were distributed by SunSetter from June 1999 to January 2019, distributed through Costco Wholesale, sold alone for $100, and used in promotions.
