The problem is that affected Ford pickups could experience an unintended downshift into first gear without warning, which could result in the loss of vehicle control. Ford is aware of at least 5 accidents linked to the issue, including 1 report of whiplash to a passenger.

Specific models affected include F150 pickups from model years 2011-2013, which are equipped with 6-speed automatic transmission, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall includes about 1.26 million trucks in the U.S., and 221,000 in Canada. Ford dealerships will update the powertrain software free of charge.

The automaker will begin notifying owners of the recalled trucks next month by mail.
