Affected products may contain undeclared desmethyl carbodenafil, which is similar to sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra and other erectile dysfunction (ED) medications. The presence of this drug can be deadly when combined with nitrates found in heart and blood pressure medications, according to an FDA recall notice issued Thursday.
The recall affects all lots of “New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee,” which were distributed nationwide in 13-gram packages “to consumers via individuals or internet” from July 2014 through June 2016, FDA said. The company is notifying its customers of the recall by phone.
The recall comes nearly a year after the FDA issued a public notice warning against use of the exact same brand of coffee after desmethyl carbodenafil was found in the product.
In its warning notices, FDA noted a growing trend of dietary supplements or conventional foods with undeclared medications and/or chemicals.
“These products are typically promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, and body building and are often represented as being ‘all natural,’” the agency said. “FDA is unable to test and identify all products marketed as dietary supplements that have potentially harmful hidden ingredients.”
To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the most recent Bestherbs Coffee recall. However, in May the recall of a similar product made by Caverflo.com was linked to at least one death.
Consumers in possession of any recalled products should dispose of them immediately and contact their doctor with health concerns.
