Boat Owners Urged to Check for Recalled Fire Extinguishers

The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is urging boat owners to check their boats for the recalled extinguishers. You can get a free metal-handled replacement from the recall website.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall:

The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”

The recall involves 134 models of Kidde plastic-handle fire extinguishers and Kidde push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers. They have been sold throughout the U.S. since January 1, 1973.

The CPSC says there have been 391 reports of “failed or limited activation” or nozzle detachment, including one death. There have also been approximately 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns; and approximately 91 reports of property damage.

Here is a list of the recalled fire extinguishers:

Push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers: The recall involves 8 models of Kidde Pindicator fire extinguishers made from August 11, 1995 to September 22, 2017. They were primarily sold for use in home kitchens, personal watercraft, and boats.

Boat owners who have a recalled fire extinguisher should immediately contact Kidde to request a free replacement and get instructions on how to return the recalled extinguishers.
