The Smith Press Machine is a self-guiding device intended to provide stability and balance by guiding the user’s repetition during free-weight exercises. However, the machine has long been linked to severe injuries due to improper use of the device, as well as defective design.

CPSC says the risk with the Cybex Smith Machine is that the weight bar can fall during use, posing a severe injury hazard for users and people standing nearby. CPSC has received at least 27 reports of injuries, including paralysis and spine fracture.

Products affected by the recall include the Cybex Smith Press model 5340, which was sold from 1989 to 1993, and model 5341, sold from 1993 to 2009. The model number is printed on the base of the frame, CPSC said.

Cybex said owners of Smith Machines covered by the recall should contact the company for either a refund or a repair. The recall officially began on Wednesday, CPSC said.
