The recall affects the CC from model years 2009 through 2016, as well as Passat sedans and wagons from 2006 through 2010. All recalled vehicles have 4-cylinder gasoline engines.
VW says that the fuel pump control computer can lose electrical power, which can stop gas from flowing and cause the engine to stop. This can also make the fuel pump continue running after the vehicle is turned off.
The automaker will notify owners about the issue in October and send a 2nd letter when replacement computers are available. Dealers will change out the computers free of charge, and move them to an area where they are less susceptible to heat and mechanical stress.
Chinese authorities conducted an investigation last year that led to a recall in that country, which prompted the U.S. recall, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
A VW spokesperson in the U.S. did not know how many vehicles were recalled in China or if the action had been taken in any other countries.
To date, no reports of crashes or injuries have been associated with the problem, VW said.
