All of the salmonella infections reported to date have been linked to the following Lactalis baby formula products – Picot SL, Pepti Junior 1, Milumel Bio 1 and Picot Riz.
The recalled baby formula was destined for markets including Britain, China, Greece, Pakistan, Peru, Colombia, Morocco and Sudan. The United States, which is one of Lactalis’ biggest markets, is not affected by the recall.
Lactalis was informed earlier this month about an outbreak of salmonella poisoning in children who had consumed its products, but the company’s response was not sufficient to bring the risk of contamination under control, according to France’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
A potential source of the outbreak has been identified in a tower used to dry out the milk at a production site in France, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Salmonella poisoning can cause serious illness in anyone; however, infants and children are at an increased risk of severe infection because their immune systems haven’t fully developed. Signs and symptoms include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
- Fever
- Headache
Headquartered in Laval, France, Lactalis is a privately-held company that has 75,000 employees in 85 countries, and annual revenues of about 17 billion euros ($20 billion). Its other notable brands include President and Galbani cheeses and Parmalat milk.
